Robotic Vehicles…

October 10th, 2005 Posted in General News

Here is another representation that we are living in the future. DARPA which is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for the United States government (the same agency that founded the itnernet) has just awarded this team from Stanford University a $2 million dollar prize for having their modified Volkswagon Touareg finish first in a challenge that required teams from around the country (even the world) to compete in a race in which a vehicle must finish a 132 mile road course absolutely totally driven by robotics. No human touch once the vehicle started. It needed to manuever and guide itself with articifial intelligence through the whole course.

I found this so fascinating since this is a huge breakthrough in automated transportation. It will be used first in the military to send vehicles without human control into hostile territories to begin a mission, thus limiting casualties, and on the public sector side, it will be awesome to hop in your car and have it take you where ever you wish for it to go while you relax with your Starbucks in your hand! :D
